Hastings Fat Tuesday

Mardi Gras on the coast every February

About

Hastings Fat Tuesday was established in 2009 by local musician Bob Tipler and event producer Adam Daly as a seaside answer to New Orleans’ famous Mardi Gras festivities. Aiming to showcase Hastings’ eccentric, highly creative music scene during the quiet mid-February lull, the event originated as a modest pub crawl where local bands rotated through packed venues in the historic Old Town. Driven by intense grassroots support and community spirit, it rapidly expanded into the UK’s largest Mardi Gras celebration, evolving into a major five-day cultural extravaganza that draws thousands of music fans, brass bands, and performers every winter. The festival spans the five days leading up to Ash Wednesday, transforming the coastal town into a vibrant matrix of fancy dress, colorful feathers, brass music, and eclectic sounds. Festivities kick off on Friday evening with Unconvention, a grassroots music industry conference, alongside Le Grand Mardi Gras Ball, an extravagant masked costume party. Saturday hosts Saturday Unplugged, where over 40 emerging and established acts perform rapid-fire 15-minute acoustic sets across dozens of pubs and cafes, while the Sonics strand showcases experimental electronic music and sound art. Sunday emphasizes family-friendly community traditions with the colorful Umbrella Parade, in which residents march along the seafront decorated with handmade umbrellas alongside second-line brass bands, culminating in Preservation Sunday live sets. Following roots and reggae showcases on Slim Monday, the festival climaxes on Shrove Tuesday itself. The flagship Fat Tuesday Tour sees 24 bands play synchronized 20-minute sets across 12 venues, racing between pubs to deliver continuous live music before the celebrations spill into late-night after-parties. Despite its growing national reputation and commercial success, Hastings Fat Tuesday remains fundamentally a community-driven, largely free event that provides vital economic support to local venues and celebrates the town’s unique, rebellious cultural identity.
