Lazy Girls Film Club presents Shiva Baby, a hilarious, claustrophobic comedy of manners from Canadian filmmaker Emma Seligman (director of the recent hit film Bottoms).
Rachel Sennott stars as Danielle, a directionless college student who has been making extra cash through casual sex work. While attending a shiva (a Jewish period of mourning) with her parents, she is forced to answer endless uncomfortable questions about her life. Things get more complicated when she discovers that both her ‘sugar daddy’ and her ex-girlfriend are among the guests, setting the scene for a host of messy interactions.
Recalling the films of John Cassevetes, this brilliant portrait of a flawed character is both culturally specific and universally relatable in its depiction of youthful uncertainty. With a star-making central performance from Sennott, it is an exhilarating debut feature from an important new voice in modern filmmaking.
