The Royal Standard – East Beach Street, Hastings

With wood-fired pizzas, lovely Sunday lunches and an interesting regular menu – plus a top selection of beers and ciders – The Royal Standard ticks all the boxes. There’s a roaring fire on cold days and a secluded garden when the weather is finer. And there’s nowhere better to watch the world go by than their outide picnic benches.

Better still, Chris, the owner of The Royal Standard loves music. A wall ull of well-worn vinyl plays randomly on the turntable in the corner, and there are some amazing bands get to play here on a regular basis … both local favourites and national (or often international) acts, courtesy of adept promoters, The Frat Cave.

FOOD

Tasty, traditional pub grub makes the Royal Standard one of the best pubs in Hastings for a satisfying meal by the sea front.

The menu here is packed with coastal classics including fisherman’s pie and a locally caught ‘catch-of-the-day’, while there’s also classic country fare in the form of shepherd’s pie, hearty stews and much more.

WHAT THEY SAY

Lovely pub, great atmosphere, great staff, live music and vinyl! What more could you possibly want?

Vincent Buzz Killington

Sweet pub great staff and tunes .. what more can you ask for

Adam Munster

I love this place, so cosy! Fabulous staff .. Open fire! And vinyl. .. What’s not to love !

Pippa Pixie Presley

MORE THAN A PINT…

There’s more to this place than just fine beer and cracking community spirit though. The Royal Standard flies the flag for live music in Hastings too.

Regular live gigs and open mic nights always draw a great crowd – while weekly curry nights, regular tapas nights and a rather unique ‘cheese bingo’ are music to the ears of local foodies!

Rock-a-Nore

Fisheries

There have been Hastings fishermen and fishmongers in many branches of the Elliot family history since the 1800’s, including such evocatively named local legends as Spreader Benton, Hardy Fullager, Dickie Gannon and Lizzie Rich.

Sonny’s grandma, Polly Gannon, used to push a fish cart seven miles from Hastings to Bexhill and back again every day before his parents Albert & Lilly set up Rock-a-Nore Fisheries some 30 years ago.

Today, Rock-a-Nore Fisheries is still a family business, and Sonny’s brother, sister, and aunt all work in the shop – and Albert, now 79, still makes their delicious smoked chilli jelly.

Trained as a chef in London’s famous Brown’s hotel during the war, Albert has always been a great experimenter with food – he invented the families secret smoked salmon cure decades ago, and they’ve never changed it since.
