Cult US band Grails return to the UK for the first time since 2018 including their first date in Hastings!

Since their inception in Portland, Oregon in the year 2000, instrumental group Grails have patiently developed into a rather radical study in tension and meditation. Releasing albums on the Neurosis imprint Neurot Recordings and Important Records before ultimately finding their home at Temporary Residence Ltd, Grails’ music bridges the gap between psychedelic rock, cosmic minimalism, obscure library music and the lush and evocative film scores of yesteryear while sounding entirely contemporary.

In support of their 2023 album ‘Anches En Maat’, Grails return to the UK for the first time since 2018 and we are proud to present their first ever show in Hastings, East Sussex.

James Blackshaw

Initially inspired by the guitarits of the 60’s Takoma label to teach himself fingerpicking, long time Hastings resident James Blackshaw writes long-form pieces primarily for solo 12-string guitar that are heavily influenced by minimalist composers and European classical music and which use drones, overtones and repeating patterns alongside a strong inclination for melody to create instrumental music that is both intelligent, hypnotic and emotionally charged.

Releasing over ten albums in the last twenty years on labels such as Important Records, Tompkins Square and Young God Records, Blackshaw will be performing new material from his highly anticipated forthcoming album due for release in April this year.

This is a strictly limited capacity event and the only show Grails are doing south of London on this tour.

We welcome another of the UK’s finest DJ’s for his Hastings debut. Wigan-born Wes Baggaley has played everywhere from legendary queer night Adonis to Berlin’s Berghain, Boiler Room, I Love Acid, and his much talked about Houghton sets, Wes is also co-curator of the renowned party Bottom Heavy.

Expect a well curated tough, no nonsense journey of underground music old and new at our residency @ the intimate back room of The Pig, Hastings.

Smokin Jo:

Most recently Jo has played for Glitterbox at Hi Ibiza, two epic gigs at Glastonbury for Block9 and Greenpeace, Shindig Festival, Defected Festival in Croatia and UK, Clockwork Orange in UK and Amnesia in Ibiza, Morning Gloryville and appeared in a documentary for Ministry of Sound The Annual Classic Tour as well as hosting and playing on one of their live tour dates before the orchestra hit the stage. Summer 2016 Jo was headlining the Ibiza Space opening party and playing at the Final ever closing party where she was resident for 10 years .

Jo was resident DJ for 3 years at the uber cool Sexy Fish in Mayfair playing to the likes of Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp, Harrison Ford and the Beckham’s and is now playing regular monthly gigs at The Ned, White City House, plus London’s coolest East End venues. At London Fashion week for the past four years Jo has produced the music and played live at Julien Macdonald’s stunning shows.

Jon Carter:

Alongside Norman Cook, the Chemical Brothers and Andy Weatherall, Jon was one of the original residents at the then mind-blowing and now legendary Heavenly Social.

The breakthrough came in 1994 with a dub coloured 4/4 track ‘The Dollar’, Jon’s first disc outing on the then still embryonic Wall Of Sound label. A subsequent move to Heavenly was marked by the release of ‘Blow The Whole Joint Up’ under the name Monkey Mafia, one of the defining tunes of the era and still a club favourite five years later.

His work behind the decks was opened up to wider scrutiny with the release of two outstanding mix CDs: ‘Live at the Social Vol. 2’ and an essential mix together with Paul Oakenfold and Pete Tong. All this whist his own studio product, Monkey Mafia, was honing itself with firstly ‘Work Mi Body’ (with reggae star Patra on vocals) and then the acclaimed ’15 Steps EP’.
Remix wise,

Jon has worked with some of music’s biggest names, from right across the musical spectrum; U2, Manic Street Preachers and the Prodigy (with whom Jon toured as a DJ). But it’s probably his remixing of lesser known artists that has yielded the most satisfying results- Selectah’s ‘Wede Man’, ‘Cubik’ by 808 State and last year’s treatment of the Sugar Hill classic Breakdance Boogie by West St Mob. Most recently it’s been tracks by the likes of Luke Slater and Felix Da Housecatt getting the Carter touch whilst his remix of a new Mekon/ Roxanne Shante tune is due out later in the year. The latter three have been linked by a fierce uptempo drive but at the other end of the scale Jon has also excelled- and nowhere more so than his delicate reworking of the Beach Boys genius ‘God Only Knows’ which crept out almost unnoticed as a DJ promo and has been in demand ever since.

In February 2024 Jon is releasing a brand new album.
