Rich Hall’s Hoedown

Rich Hall’s Hoedown

The De La Warr Pavilion
The De La Warr Pavilion, Marina
Bexhill,  TN40 1DP Map

Rich Hall’s critically acclaimed new show begins its second leg of touring and is coming to Bexhill on Sea this November.

There has never been a better time to be an American comedian in the UK. Hall's precision dismantling of the tenuous relationship between two countries is as freewheeling and deadly accurate as ever.

His BBC Four documentaries, most recently Rich Hall's Countrier Than You and Rich Hall's Presidential Grudge Match and BBC Radio 4 series Rich Hall's (US Election) Breakdown have built him a new legion of followers, as has appearances on Have I Got News For You and QI. But if you've only ever seen Hall on TV, you've short-changed yourself.

The Hoedown begins as a withering dissection of Trump's America, but ends up being a celebration of Americana. There's stand-up, improvised ballads, cracking good musicianship, and ultimately a hilarious, foot-stomping, shit-kicking good time to be had by all. Even if you don't own a hoe.

This Canadian abroad is the UK’s 2017 break-out star. Katherine recently garnered rave reviews as the presenter and writer of Channel 4’s critically acclaimed prime time series, How Did You Get So Rich? and also regularly appears on all the UK’s major panel shows from BBC’s QI, Have I Got News For You and Live at the Apollo to Dave’s Taskmaster Series 2 (which she won) and Channel 4’s 8 out of 10 Cats as well as co-hosting two back to back series of Comedy Central’s upcoming Your Face or Mine reboot with Jimmy Carr.

The Other Band - Live at The Black Cat

The Other Band - Live at The Black Cat

22 Grand Parade, St Leonards on Sea, TN37 6FA, United Kingdom Map

A ‘covers’ band? Yes and no. It’s Heartbreak Hotel, but not as we know it! If I Were a Carpenter on speed. Galway Girl, but not the Ed Sheeran version. Route 66 jazzed up; He’ll Have to Go, with a Ry Cooder twist...

A 4-piece outfit from Hastings, East Sussex, The Other Band have been gaining a loyal following with their repertoire of Blues, Country, Americana and R&B.

Jettisoning the drum kit, the lively local outfit make compelling music underpinned by smooth fretless bass, rhythmic lead guitar, melodic mandolin and belting blues harp, all accompanied by vibrant vocals.

Songs from familiars like Dylan and Kristofferson combine with tunes from less headline-grabbing artists such as John Prine, Hoyt Axton, JJ Cale and Townes Van Zandt ... that’s the essence of The Other Band’s original sound.

The Other Band always endeavour to put on an energetic and entertaining live show, worthy of their skill and the extensive selection of songs performed with ease. They are regulars at The Black Cat for good reason – so come along and Dance the Night Away in Maverick style.

Somebody watches from an empty seat in the stalls, witnessed by many people on separate occasions this was such an extraordinary experience it even caused a performer one night while in the middle of a show to completely stop half way through a song. Weird sounds have been heard in the crypt area which still holds three coffins containing a woman, a man and a child to this day. The other bodies have been removed but the sound of knocks still come from the areas the other coffins were stored. Experience the atmosphere in Muriel Matters' bedroom where she died in 1969. Muriel Matters was a big part of the Suffragette movement. Being followed and doors locking themselves are other reported occurences.

The cost for the night is £45 per head, arrive at 8.00pm for an 8.30pm start. The night will finish at 1.30am, by which time you will have had the chance to experience what it is like to be a paranormal investigator, and had the opportunity to try a mixture of traditional techniques as well as modern technology to try to decide for yourselves – who haunts St Mary in the castle?

We're very excited to announce that our next Friday Night Takeover is by the one and only Sam Calver who will be performing live then taking to the decks to DJ until late.

Hailing from Hastings and poised to make his mark on the music scene, up-and-coming UK singer-songwriter Sam Calver has steadily been building a strong following in his hometown where he has performed to almost 20,000 people over the last year and now, following a recent collaboration with The Wildcatz, he released his debut single Midnight which premiered on 1883.

Effortlessly mixing his infectious and incredibly soulful vocal prowess with poignant lyricism and mesmerising melodies, Midnight has also been brought to life with a must-see visual that was shot in Sam’s hometown and features the venue where he played his first ever gig and the house he was living in when he wrote the single and more upcoming music.

This November sees the long awaited return to the Kino-Teatr of local songwriters Trevor Moss & Hannah-Lou. It’s been two years since the release of their last album, the Ethan Johns produced ‘Expatriot’, a short sabbatical taken following the birth of their son. The duo are now marking their return with the release of a limited edition 7’’ vinyl, ‘We should’ve Gone Dancing / When Spring Calls’, accompanied by a new video, a run of shows with Jools Holland and a handful of headline shows and in-stores.

A prodigious and prolific musical polymath whose varied musical guises include his multi-faceted alter-ego 'Dollboy', the electro-stylings of 'The Assistant', the motodisco of 'Rhododendron and Australian Testing Labs Inc'., and the freshly-minted ambient Gilroy Mere. Audition - Diary of a Nobody

The Stables Theatre and Arts Centre
The Bourne
Hastings,  TN34 3BD Map

• Playing Dates: 4-12 May 2018
• Audition: Stables Theatre, Hastings, 26 November 2017, 6pm

Scripts available from box office (£10 refundable deposit) 01424 423221
.
Diary of a Nobody ranks among the finest of English comic novels, and was described by no less than Evelyn Waugh as “the funniest book in the world.”

It records the daily lives of lower-middle-class Victorian bank clerk Charles Pooter, his wife Carrie, his son Lupin, and numerous friends and acquaintances. Set in a London suburb, it describes in painfully hilarious detail the simplicities and humiliations, trials and tribulations of 15 months in the life of the mundane, upright Pooter.

In this well-received stage adaptation by Hugh Osborne, the diaries are presented by Pooter as a series of “dramatic representations.” He is joined by a cast of three who between them play all the characters described in the diaries – very much in the fast-paced, quick-change style of other literary stage adaptions such as The 39 Steps, Three Men in a Boat, The Hound of the Baskervilles and Jeeves and Wooster.

Casting

I am looking for four very strong actors to bring this fabulous play to its full potential. While Pooter is the central character, this is essentially a show with four leads. As well as outstanding talent, versatility, timing and stage presence, all cast members will need to be good team players and willing to contribute ideas and suggestions. This show will be physically and mentally demanding yet hugely rewarding and lots of fun.

It’s essential that the actors resist the temptation to “send up” the play. Pooter and all the characters around him should be played as truthfully as possible in order to achieve maximum comic potential.

While Pooter is self-evidently a man of a certain age, I am more open minded about the gender and ages of Darwitts, Birks-Spooner and Hillbutter, and would welcome anyone who thinks they have the talent to fit the bill.

Characters
• Charles Pooter: Male, playing age approx. 45-55.
Quite simply one of English literature’s greatest comic characters and perhaps the blueprint for the likes of Captain Mainwaring, Basil Fawlty, Victor Meldrew and David Brent. Gauche, straight-laced, formal, bumptious and snobbish - Pooter is completely unaware of his own absurdity and the way he is perceived by others, yet he is also sympathetic and likeable. This character spawned the adjective “Pooterish” - self-important and mundane or narrow-minded. A terrific opportunity for the right actor.

• Mr Darwitts. Plays: Carrie (Pooter’s wife); Cummings (Pooter’s friend); Farmerson (the ironmonger); Carrie’s mother; Lillie Girl and others.

• Mr Birks-Spooner. Plays: Sarah (the Pooters’ maid) for half the play; Gowing (Pooter’s friend); the Waiter, Second Helpful Man, Lupin (The Pooters’ son); Daisy Mutlar (Lupin’s sweetheart) and others.

• Mr Hilbutter. Plays: Horwin; Pitt, Trillip; Mrs James of Sutton; the Old Friend; First Helpful Man; Frank Mutlar; Sarah (for half the play); Murray Posh and others.
______________________________________________________

Audition pieces – this is a guide. Please let me know on the day if there are any other pieces you want to perform:

• P 10-15 - Pooter, Gowing/Sarah, Cummings/Farmerson/Carrie, Horwin
• P 29-31 - Sarah (Birks-Spooner), Carrie, Pooter, Mrs James
• P 41-42 - Pooter, Hilbutter/Pitt, Cummings
• P 49 (from Lupin’s entrance) -52 - Pooter, Carrie, Lupin, Hillbutter (as Sarah)
• P 86-88 - Carrie, Mrs James, Pooter, Gowing
• P 76-77 - Pooter, Cummings, Lupin
• P 115 - Pooter speech
• P 43 (from Hilbutter entrance)-46 – Pooter, Hilbutter, Gowing, Carrie/Cummings “Consequences” game.
______________________________________________________

This is an open audition and I look forward to seeing as many talented performers as possible.

I anticipate starting rehearsals in earnest in February – probably three per week - with perhaps a couple of readings and familiarisations in January.

Best wishes and good luck.

One of the most profound indie bands in the past decade, the majestic sounds of Grammy nominated and Billboard topping Fleet Foxes' return is something to behold.

This is a rare appearance after their last sold-out performance at the Brighton Dome.

Their new album Crack-Up delves into epic powered and long transcendental songs, including their trademark sparkling harmonies, and has earned the same critical praises as its predecessors, cementing their place in an important part of musical history.

Fleet Foxes’ self-titled debut (out on indie label Bella Union) made a profound impact on the international musical landscape, earning them Uncut’s first ever Music Award Prize, and topping numerous ‘Best of” lists’, including Rolling Stone’s 100 Best Albums of the 2000s and Pitchfork’s 50 Best Albums of 2008. Fleet Foxes is certified Gold in North America and Platinum in both the UK and Australia. The follow-up album Helplessness Blues was met with the same critical praise as its predecessor (Mojo five stars, Rolling Stone four stars, Pitchfork Best New Music); that album debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard Top 200, went Gold in the UK, and earned the band a GRAMMY nomination. Past member Josh Tillman aka Father John Misty now a successful musicianship in his own right, was also part of the band for a long time.

“Likely to be the most remarkable album you will hear this year… the return of one of the most original bands of this century.” – The Times

“These 11 tracks are immersive, shifting creations, retaining the heavenly signature harmonies of FF’s previous work, while further expanding the band’s sound.” – The Observer

Immediately drafting him in to replace Malcolm Mooney, the band, oft-considered one of the single greatest outfits in western musical history went on to record a plethora of seminal LPs, including TAGO MAGO and EGE BAMYASI.

Damo Suzuki's never-ending tour here makes a rare stop-off in Hastings, where he will perform with an assembly of hand-picked local musicians. Suzuki's synthetic language creates an absolutely astonishing performance, his voice remains a beautiful philosopher's stone, the alchemical jigsaw piece of the krautrock puzzle.

plus support TBA

DJ Juliet Harris aka Indie Wonderland playing before, after and during the live music
