Back-in-the-day – around about the turn of the last century – we used to put on a party in London/Prague/Nottingham/Leeds and Hastings called ‘FYE’. It was a collaborative event between a bunch of music fans who had all ‘met’ on the Brownswood Message board.
The FYE concept was pretty simple really, 30-minute sets, anything goes, check egos in at the door, all about the fun, no such thing as a guilty pleasure, and expect to expand your ‘wants’ list sevenfold.
Hence FYE = Fun your Ear. Stories, fanzines, moonshine, mix tapes, Samizdat Jottings printed on Malayan Jelutong, Panini stickers and laughs were all swapped. Eventually those parties drifted into message-board folklore.
You never quite knew what you were going to get, which was the beauty of it all. Mutant Jazz, Rockabilly, Folk, Funk, Techno, Pop, and Disco would seamlessly mix with OSTs, Gamelan Nose Flute Quintets, Krautrock, Brazilian cover versions, Heavy Rock and Acid skiffle.
Barring the Covids, (please), we have recreated that vibe down the Royal Standard for the last 15 plus years, and a birthday was crowbarred in too! This year I am massively honoured to have the following lovely people play Saturday 4th March down the Royal Standard. All very welcome. ‘Ave it x
I would like to respectfully dedicate this party to the memory of Richard Dennett. Rich would always turn up for his traditional late afternoon set and say, “Folk Funk, Ade?’ The music that then followed was truly wonderful and Rich will be sorely missed this year.”
