Born and raised in South London, and graduating from London’s most demanding performing arts school — the streets, as a busker — singer-songwriter Ese Okorodudu (vocals, guitar) is backed by the incendiary Vooduu People: ex-Noisette Pharoah Russell (drums), Basile Petite (bass) and – since June 2018 – Destra Orsheena (”Sheena”) Ross on backing vocals. Keyboardist Jackson Baird has also joined the core quartet as a regular collaborator.
A fiery, sensitive, poetic songwriter, Ese is also what renowned hip hop engineer/producer/beatmaster Jay Burnett (Beastie Boys, Run DMC, LL Cool J, Afrika Bambaataa etc) describes as “the best natural singer I’ve heard in 30 years”. She and her band are inspired by a range of legends, from Jimi Hendrix to Led Zep, via Bowie, Prince, Skunk Anansie’s Skin and Erykah Badu.
