Soft Machine — Live in Hastings (International Tour)
One of the most influential UK avant-jazz and jazz-rock bands of all time, Soft Machine emerged from the late-1960s psychedelic underground as contemporaries of Syd Barrett’s Pink Floyd and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, before evolving into Europe’s most important pioneers of jazz-rock fusion. Their genre-defying work has shaped generations of musicians and continues to inspire today’s experimental artists.
The current line-up features guitar legend John Etheridge, acclaimed saxophonist/flutist/keyboardist Theo Travis, long-time Canterbury scene bassist Fred Thelonious Baker, and internationally renowned drummer Asaf Sirkis. Together they perform classic compositions by Hugh Hopper, Mike Ratledge, and Karl Jenkins, alongside new material from their latest studio album Thirteen — hailed by many critics as the best Soft Machine album in 50 years.
This concert marks Soft Machine’s first ever appearance in Hastings, as part of their international tour. Expect fearless improvisation, progressive jazz-fusion, psychedelia, ambient textures, and a band that remains strikingly contemporary — not a nostalgia act, but a living, shape-shifting project.
“Not a nostalgia or revival band but a very vital unit — still capable of surprise and delight.” — The Wire
