Penelope Isles, Winter Gardens, Hanya Live at The Piper IVW

February 1 @ 7:30 pm - 11:30 pm

austerity records are honoured to present an evening of music in support of ‘Independent Venue Week’ at The Piper, Saint Leonards.

Penelope Isles Hailing from the Isle of Man, Penelope Isles is the sounds of Jack and Lily Wolter, with the help of friends Becky Redford and Jack Sowton. Currently based between Brighton and Cornwall, the band perform melodic fuzz pop with dynamics that will transfix and satisfy. Hypnotic, chiming bedroom pop music.

Their set is the wide-eyed optimism of youth with a knack for great pop hooks which they smear with psych fuzz, similar to the likes of Cheatahs, or Moon King. Their tracks are like your favourite sweets with shards of broken glass embedded in them, the potential of which is just screaming out for attention.

Their Debut LP ‘Until The Tide Creeps In’ was released on Bella Union in July 2019.

Winter Gardens Taking influence from 80’s post-punk, Factory, Rough Trade, 4AD, Creation era bands, Winter Gardens have developed their own ‘dream punk’ sound, all the ethereal haze of shoegaze and dreampop with the energy of punk, their current set will take you through a cascade of shimmering tones, hazy vocals and raw energy.

Winter Gardens have managed to secure support slots for Modern English, Petal,The Wave Pictures, Mammoth Penguins, Say Sue Me, Magic Wands, Charles Howl and opened this year’s Rockaway headlined by Gary Numan and Echo & The Bunnymen.

Their debut single ‘Coral Bells’ was well received online as well as printed press including German music magazine ‘Visions’, 2020 will see WG release their debut EP.

HANYA Originally a bedroom project formed by guitarist and singer Heather Sheret, HANYA is made up of Heather, Jack Watkins and bassist Ben Varnes. The trio released their debut EP ‘I Used To Love You, Now I Don’t’, in November 2018 on Bristol’s Leisure Records.

“This shoegazing trio is fronted by Heather Sheret who is the owner of one of the best voices in music today. Her ability to switch from delicate pristine vocals to a fractious roar mid breath and then back again is, well, breath-taking. Part of the reason is down to drummer Jack Watkins and bassist Ben Varnes crafting these deep rhythms that give Sheret space to whisper and roar. Live they create truly a mesmerising and unforgettable experience.” Clash Magazine

“Over the past few years Hanya, frontwoman Heather Sheret and drummer Jack Watkins, have been winning over audiences and critics alike with a brand of visceral shoegaze that combines a Riot Grrrl sensibility, stark musicality and introspective lyrics. Live, Sheret’s vocals soar and rage. ‘I Used To Love You, Now I Don’t’ is a masterclass in minimalism.” God Is In The TV Zine.

Presented by austerity records.
