Since her striking debut (Wild & Undaunted) in 2007 musician and singer Lisa Knapp has gone on to win a coveted BBC Radio 2 Folk Award for her song Two Ravens, has appeared numerous times on Radio and Television, notably at the BBC Electric Proms celebration of the late Lal Waterson and Christmas BBC 4 TV. She was guest presenter for a feature length programme for BBC Radio 4โs Shipping Songs documentary which was also selected for Pick of The Week.
A long-held fascination with the traditional practices and folklore surrounding the month of May became the foundation of Lisaโs 2017 evocatively titled album โTill April Is Dead – A Garland of Mayโ Produced with her long time partner Gerry Diver the album also includes collaborations with fellow Shirley Collins fans Graham Coxon (Blur) and David Tibet (Current 93).
The album delves right into the light and dark of our historical spring rituals and weaves these seasonal folk fragment through smatterings of field recordings, birdsong, ticking clocks and spoken word to create and exhilarating and immersive trip through tradition. Till April Is Dead received five star reviews across the board, with The Guardian describing it as โan album overflowing with warmth, light and waywardness: and Mojo magazine insisting that :Knapp and Diver deliver ancient tradition with respect and beauty.โ
In constant demand as a performer she has toured the UK numerous times solo, with her band and in collaboration with other artists and projects. Her work is steeped in traditional song, folklore and mysterious customs of old England yet her refreshing experimental and often unconventional approach to interpretations, arrangements, songwriting and modern manipulation of sound across three lauded records.
Her latest collaborative work, recorded during lockdown with renowned folk artist Marry Waterson and singer/sound artist Nathaniel Mann – produced by Gerry Diver, was released in March 2023 on the One Little Independent label.
This concert is held in the the beautiful surroundings of the historic St. Clements Church, which is situated in the heart of Hastings Old Town, an evening not to be missed!
