Jake Bugg is bringing his timeless melodies and insightful lyrics to Bexhill’s De La Warr Pavilion this month.

TICKETS ON SALE HERE

Jake’s solo world tour starts tonight (5 Nov) in Cardiff, and by the time he reaches Bexhill he’ll have notched up a dozen shows in England and Ireland.

The tour then takes him across American and Europe before returning to the UK for a further string of dates in the spring.

In total he’ll be doing 60 shows, and it’s a safe bet the vast majority will be completely sold out.

His new album, ‘Hearts That Strain’ entered the UK charts at number 6, and the ‘Lightening Bolt‘ star definitely looks set to keep the hits coming.

Caroline Achaintre: Fantômas

The De La Warr Pavilion
The De La Warr Pavilion, Marina
Bexhill,  TN40 1DP Map

Fantômas is an exhibition of new works by artist Caroline Achaintre.

Her visually striking, witty ceramic sculptures and hand-tufted wall hangings incorporate diverse references such as catwalk fashion, carnival, and death-metal iconography, as well as Primitivism and Expressionism – early twentieth-century Western art movements that borrowed heavily from non-Western and prehistoric imagery to find new ways of representing the modern world.

Achaintre’s sculptures often resemble masks. Appearing in cultures throughout the world, masks have the potential to take on a life of their own, conjuring ‘characters’ in the mind of the viewer. The title of this exhibition refers to the mask worn by the shape-shifting French criminal Fantômas, invented by writers Marcel Allain and Pierre Souvestre in 1911. In the 1960s, a TV adaptation of the novel was made, in which Fantômas’ face was hidden by a rigid-looking blue mask. For Achaintre, the mask is a place where fantasy and reality can exist at the same time.

For Fantômas, Achaintre will make a series of new ceramics, accompanied by new wall hangings. She will create the ceramics whilst undertaking a joint residency between the De La Warr Pavilion and West Dean College, an arts and conservation college founded by British poet Edward James, a keen art collector known for his patronage of the Surrealist movement.

Roy Voss: The Way Things Are

The De La Warr Pavilion
The De La Warr Pavilion, Marina
Bexhill,  TN40 1DP Map

Roy Voss’ new commission The Way Things Are is a sculpture that stretches the length of the Pavilion’s ground floor gallery space, between the floor-to-ceiling windows and the thin columns that run along it.

Constructed from machined and push-jointed wood, the sculpture’s form is drawn from the artist’s memories and from Victorian lithographs. It is a delicate and precise skeletal form that conjures an idea of a pier.

The Way Things Are extends Voss’ interest in romantic longing that exists between desire and real experience. With the wild sea as a backdrop, Voss finds something simultaneously prosaic and profound about the British seaside pier. Offering a familiar but inscrutable promise of enjoyment, there is a simple impulse to reach the end, with the melancholic yet reassuring certainty of returning.

The Way Things Are is a co-commission between Berwick Visual Arts and Grundy Art Gallery in Blackpool, where it will tour next year.

Runner-up on the seventh series of UK’s The X Factor, Rebecca Ferguson comes to DLWP in February 2018.

Having co-written her record-breaking debut album Heaven, and going on to release a further three follow-ups, Rebecca has proven herself to be a recording artist with a passion for her craft that is second to none.

Released in 2011, Heaven, was a critical and commercial success selling 128,000 copies in its first week and peaked at No. 3 in the UK Official Charts, making her the fastest-selling debut solo artist of the past decade (2007-2017). Going on to release her strong debut follow up, Freedom, in 2013, and then her third studio album Lady Sings The Blues (covering a number of jazz classics made famous by Billie Holiday), Rebecca shows off her versatile style with ease. Her fourth album Superwoman released last year, shows Rebecca has come a long way from the shy twenty-something audiences first saw on television 7 years ago.

Continuing to flourish as a confident songwriter and stunning live performer, embarking on countless tours across the UK, Europe and US, this working-class girl from Liverpool has no plans on stopping anytime soon.

‘I blew on Mr.Greenhill’s main joints with a very ‘hot’ breath’ presents moving image and photographic works from the last ten years, selected in response to the Pavilion’s architecture and social context.

Together and separately, Guimarães and Akhøj explore the residual histories of art, design and architecture, exposing unexpected connections between states of rapture and modernity. Much of their recent work has emerged from research undertaken in the small Brazilian town of Palmelo, many of whose inhabitants are Spiritist mediums. Presented in the UK for the first time, Studies for A Minor History of Trembling Matter (2017) and Captain Gervasio’s Family (2014) are both set within this community. These films sit alongside Guimaraes’ film Canoas (2010), set in the home that architect Oscar Neimeyer built for himself outside Rio de Janeiro, and Akhøj’s Welcome (to the Teknival), 2009-17, a response to the restoration of Eileen Gray’s modernist villa e.1027. This is the artists’ first exhibition in a UK public institution.

DLWP Members Pre Sale – Thursday 14 December, 10am
General On Sale – Friday 15 December 10am

Beth Nielsen Chapman is best known for her hits This Kiss (for Faith Hill) and Sand & Water (covered by Elton John in tribute to Diana, Princess of Wales).

From writing hits for other artists to recording her own, twice Grammy-nominated Beth Nielsen Chapman has truly embraced musical diversity. A breast cancer survivor, environmental activist, teacher of workshops and lecturer on the magic of creativity, she’s penned numerous hits and written songs for many top artists including Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, Bette Midler, Elton John, Neil Diamond, Trisha Yearwood, Martina McBride, Michael McDonald, Amy Grant, Keb Mo’, Roberta Flack, Waylon Jennings, Faith Hill, Willie Nelson, Bette Lavette and many more. Her music has been heard on ER, Dawson’s Creek, Providence, Felicity and in movie soundtracks, including The Prince of Egypt, Message In A Bottle, The Rookie, Where The Heart Is and Practical Magic. Mega-hit “This Kiss,” sung by Faith Hill , was ASCAP’S 1999 Song Of The Year, garnered a Grammy nomination and Nashville NAMMY’S 1999 Songwriter of the Year.

Beth’s new studio album Heart of Glass will be released in on 9 February 2018.

Hearts Of Glass is a powerful collection of songs that dig deep into the place within us where vulnerability meets strength. Produced by Sam Ashworth, the album is sparse and beautifully recorded. The songs, mostly written by Beth alone, include several new compositions, from the haunting Epitaph For Love to the instant classic You’re Still My Valentine, to the infectious Enough For Me, written with Sam. The opening track, Come To Mine, the only other co-written song, was composed with the legendary Graham Gouldman and Kevin Montgomery at Chris Difford’s Songwriting retreat in Somerset England.

Milton Jones Is Out There

The De La Warr Pavilion, Marina
Bexhill,  TN40 1DP Map

Milton Jones is Out There. No, really out there and this time he hasn't just forgotten his keys. He's holding up the mirror of truth to society, and he can see right through it, which means its probably just a window.

In his brand new show he'll be putting his foot down and lifting the lid on the pedal bin of lies of the media (which doesn't include this press release obviously). He will also be scaling the heights of fashion at the risk of falling into a terrible cravat.

Milton will be talking about his life so far - the ups, the downs and why buying his own see-saw was the best decision he ever made. But perhaps he should give all this up and seek the highest office in the land - but how do you get a desk and a swivel chair up a mountain? Oh and now he wants to be Prime Minister too. Can we do worse than the politicians we already have? Yes we can!

I originally intended to call the show, “I’ll Millennial You in a Minute”, but my promoter considered the title, “off-puttingly baffling”. That’s my own chainsaw in the photo by the way.

Is life that bad or have we good reason to complain about it? Are we filled with righteous anger at a world gone wrong or are we all just a bunch of whiny little brats? In short, are we spoiled? Come and watch as Byrne takes this question, turns it upside down and shakes it until the funny falls out. Go on, spoil yourself.

‘Comedy’s Holy Grail. Go See!’ – Sunday Times

‘Jokes come so fast that hecklers don’t have a chance to get a word in edgeways‘ – The Times

‘There is nothing quite like seeing Byrne doing what he does best’ – Daily Mail

Recognized as one of the finest observational comics in the industry, Ed’s television credits are countless (provided you’re really bad at counting); Mock The Week, Have I Got News For You, The Graham Norton Show, Live At The Apollo, The One Show, Comic Relief Bake Off 2015, The World’s Most Dangerous Roads and, most recently, he and Dara O Briain filmed the follow up their Big Adventure show for BBC2 entitled Dara and Ed’s Road to Mandalay.

Florence Peake’s RITE uses performance, film, painting and sculpture to explore the idea of the primal body as a vital force for change.

Free open rehearsal – Friday 4 May, 2 – 4pm
Performance – Sunday 6 May, 7pm. (16+, contains nudity) Book here

The De La Warr Pavilion will premiere a new work in the First floor gallery, a performance by six dancers that takes place on a floor of seven tonnes of wet clay. Using materials that remain, the work will unfold into a summer-long exhibition. RITE offers a layered reinterpretation of a pivotal moment in modernism’s history: Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, composed in 1913 for Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. Choreographed by Vaslav Nijinsky, the original performance is notorious for the riot it provoked in Paris on the first night, when theatre-goers apoplectic with anger at the performance had to be forcibly removed from the venue.

Peake, who works across media, transposes Stravinsky and Nijinsky’s iconic ballet to what she describes as ‘performative sculpture’. Taking ritual, sacrifice, labour, community and fertility as themes, RITE celebrates the primal power of the body as an expressive force against conservatism.

Research on RITE was generously supported by the Jerwood Choreographic Research Project with partners Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts, Cambridge Junction, Dance4, Greenwich Dance, LIFT, London College of Fashion, Sadler’s Wells, Site Gallery, Tintype Gallery and by public funding through Arts Council England. RITE was developed through residencies at Somerset House Studios, Site Gallery and Cass Sculpture Foundation in partnership with West Dean College and through a solo show at Studio Leigh in London.

Opening this concert will be Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture, which conjures the sights and sounds of Scottish scenery, from calm still waters to intense and dramatic storms. Elgar’s regal and mournful Elegy for strings sets the scene for the tranquil, quiet opening of Tchaikovsky’s sublime Violin Concerto. With its unrelenting energy and use of Russian peasant dance rhythms, this stunning piece is notably one of the most difficult violin concertos in the repertoire.

Closing the concert is Beethoven’s stirring Symphony No.7, which combines a wonderful blend of orchestral gravitas and swelling tunes used to great effect in the film The King’s Speech.

Bexhill,  TN40 1DP Map

Henning Wehn is back at the De La Warr Pavilion in November 2018 with brand new show!
You couldn’t make it up; surely the German Comedy Ambassador Henning Wehn hasn’t bosched out yet another new show? And what’s he still doing here anyway? Well, his lack of transferable skills is what keeps him here and his belief that practise makes perfect is what keeps him going.

This show is a much needed call to arms. Listen, everyone: stop pondering and hand-wringing. Instead get on your bike and put your face to the grindstone!

Henning’s most recent television and radio appearances include “Live At The Apollo” BBC2, “Have I Got News For You” BBC1, “Would I Lie To You” BBC1, “Fighting Talk” BBC Radio 5 Live and “The Unbelievable Truth” BBC Radio 4.
